Bridge in Lawton Woods

With thanks to Alsager Nub News

Church Lawton Parish Council has been informed that the bridge in Lawton Woods is due to be replaced during the week commencing 28th June.  The bridge over the stream and the footpath was closed earlier this month.

Alsager Carnival

With thanks to Alsager Nub News

Because of the extension of covid restrictions until 19 July, the Alsager Carnival, organised by Alsager Round Table and scheduled for 17 July, has been cancelled for now.  The carnival committee is considering whether it could be rescheduled later in the year.

Burial space in Alsager

With thanks to Alsager Chronicle

We know that burial space at Christ Church is limited and due to run out in a few years.  James Byatt of IvyMay funeral directors, based in Sandbach, has been investigating the possibility of purchasing land on Cherry Lane for a crematorium, interment of ashes and burial space.  However, following a meeting with residents who are opposed to the scheme, this will no longer be pursued.  Mr Byatt does not believe that there is another suitable location in the area.  Cheshire East Council have no intention of building another cemetery in Alsager, and unless a private scheme is approved it is likely future burials will need to be at Crewe or Congleton.

Public realm consultation

The consultation about proposals concerning Alsager Town Centre has now closed.  1,355 responses were received, and the statistical outcomes will be published shortly.  The large number of comments received will take longer to analyse and digest.  Broadly there was support for the proposals, but not for relocating the bus stop into the park, and not for cutting down mature trees.

Olive and Stitch Market

The next market is on Saturday 19 June, 9.30 – 1.00 at the Civic.

Another set of traffic lights

With thanks to Alsager Chronicle

Traffic lights at the Crewe Road/Close Lane junction have been planned for years, and Cheshire East Council kept telling our town councillors that they were still under evaluation.  However, it appears that they now have the go ahead and should be installed within the next few months.  With the new houses on Crewe Road, off Close Lane and Dunnocksfold, and the warehouses, these will be needed more than ever.

44 Crewe Road

With thanks to Alsager Chronicle

This is one of the nicest properties in the centre of Alsager, opposite Northolme Gardens and the mere.  There is now a new planning application for the property submitted which proposes opening The Bod Café Bar, to be opened by Stoke-based Titanic Brewery.  The aim is "to create a relaxing and comfortable environment where all the local community can come together, meet and socialise."  It would be a community facility and café bar throughout the day and evening, 9 am to 11 pm.  The planning application suggests that they want the business to be as sustainable as possible including sourcing local produce where possible.  It all sounds good.

However, when the last application went in there were proposals to build extensions which would have an impact on the appearance of the building, and it appears that this would be the same.  The planning application includes the following

  • Provision of a ramped access to the unit.
  • Provision of a raised external dining area to the front of the property.
  • Provision of a lightweight extension on the side of the property.

It would be a shame if any alterations spoil this lovely building, but it would be good to have it back in use.  Planning reference is 21/2816C and the last date for submitting comments is 23 June.

Cheshire Constabulary

With thanks to Alsager Chronicle

Cheshire  Constabulary have a Community Cohesion group which looks at how policing powers are used and what residents of Cheshire think about the way police use them from stop and search and arrests to use of force and hate crime.  Those who attend the meetings will view incidents captured on police body worn camera footage and discuss any concerns they may have.

If you are interested in participating find out more  here.

Covid 19 – numbers up again

A further significant increase in Cheshire East and England this week, so please still be vigilant.

In the 7 days to 12 June there have been fewer than 3 cases in Alsager West (suppressed) and 4 cases in Alsager East (rolling rate 61).  These are the same figures as two weeks ago.  However, Cheshire East rolling rate is 119 (50 two weeks ago), England is 75 (32 two weeks ago).
