Supported living flats

With thanks to Alsager Nub News

Finally building has started on the former Alsager Arms site, to build eighteen one-bedroom flats for supported living. There will be sixteen parking spaces. The scheme has been supported by Cheshire East Adult Services' commissioning team. It is expected to be completed by April 2022.

Alsager Highfields

Alsager Highfields Primary School has appointed a new headteacher, Mrs Rachel Woollam, who took up her post on 19 April. She had previously been head of school at Rode Heath Primary. For the past fifteen months Mr Carl Leech, Headteacher at Rode Heath Primary, has been seconded to Highfields as Executive Headteacher, working with Richard Middlebrook (CEO of Alsager Multi-Academy Trust) on taking forward improvements to the school after a poor Ofsted inspection.

CCTV at Alsager Sports Hub

With thanks to Alsager Nub News and Alsager Chronicle

It has now emerged that the CCTV to be installed at the sports hub will not be connected to Cheshire East's central monitoring control room in Macclesfield. Instead the proposal is that police and PCSOs will have the opportunity to review footage retrospectively, but only on the spot. Town councillors are unhappy with this and feel they should do what they can to protect the £5 million investment in the sports hub. However, more recently behaviour at the sports hub has improved and hopefully this will continue, particularly as the PCSOs will be based there. The CCTV is due to be installed on 12 May.

Council meetings

With thanks to Alsager Chronicle

As reported last week, from 7 May all council meetings will need to be held face-to-face to be legal. A case was taken to the High Court on behalf of all councils to enable them to continue to hold meetings by Zoom or other virtual means. However the High Court rejected the request saying it was a matter for Parliament, not the courts. The government maintains that it cannot make available sufficient parliamentary time to bring in the required law. This is causing significant difficulties for councils since many do not have large enough venues to enable their full councils to meet face-to-face in a covid secure manner. Cheshire East Council brought forward their annual meeting to 4 May to enable it to be conducted remotely and legally. Alsager Town Council needs to sign off its annual return and even if they need to stand in the car park a meeting will take place on 25 May to enable this to happen.

During the first lockdown in March 2020 many council matters had to be delegated to the town clerk, while others had to be deferred. Once remote meetings were permitted council business could proceed but a lot of catching up was required. It may be that the process of delegation will need to be implemented again.

Covid 19

In the 7 days to 1 May there have been fewer than 3 cases in Alsager East and in Alsager West (suppressed). Cheshire East rolling rate is 22 (16 last week), England is 23 (24 last week). So Cheshire East is increasing slightly (Cheshire West and Chester is 12).
